Belgian designer Maarten de Ceulaer will exhibit a new range of furniture, called Mutation Series, at Spazio Rossana Orlandi during Milan Design Week.

De Ceulaer describes the collection as "an experimental review of classic furniture upholstery". Spheres of cut foam are assembled on a simple base structure and coated in a rubber or flock finish - with each piece hand-assembled so that no two will be the same.

De Ceulaer sees the range as the first step in a more organic breed of furniture design, one that looks as though it has grown rather than been constructed. He adds: "Maybe one day we would be able to grow a piece of furniture like we breed or clone an animal, and manipulate its shape like a bonsai tree."

Prototypes from Mutation will also be on show at the Triennale, as part of a Belgian exhibition called Perspectives, and at group show Another Terra in Ventura Lambrate.
