Charcoal by Formafantasma

In addition to Craftica, which we previewed yesterday, Formafantasma will also show a series of charcoal water purifiers at Design Miami/Basel later this month. The project, created in collaboration with Vitra Design Museum, will be part of an exhibition curated by Amelie Znidaric, called Confrontations.

Formafantasma responded to the theme by investigating charcoal, a material associated with destruction, but which also functions as a natural water purifier. The designers worked with glass blower Massimo Lunardon and a wood carver to create a series of jars and wooden filters, which they then burnt, in the forests surrounding Zurich, to create the charcoal pieces.

The designers will show the collection at the Vitra Campus, and will build an oven in the space from which to serve black charcoal bread, complemented with purified water, during the event.

See how charcoal filters are now emerging at retail level in our trend report from New York International Gift Fair 2012.
