HBL Interview: Brunno Jahara

Batucada collection, made from aluminium, by Brunno Jahara

Up-and-coming Brazilian designer Brunno Jahara has already worked with Jaime Hayón, exhibited his designs around the world and been picked by the Campana brothers as a hot new talent. Jahara spoke to WGSN-homebuildlife about studying abroad, new projects and the importance of materials:

"Almost 100% of my projects are materials-led, which means the shape, function and everything else orbit around this choice. Right now I’m working with recycled leather, silver, ceramics, glass, marble... many, many things. I try to explore the material's strengths and make the most out of it."

We also asked Jahara whether he thought Brazil is still looking for an identity when it comes to design.

"We have a great design and architecture history, and I feel we are gaining more and more respect internationally lately. We still need more support from manufacturers, who are slowly realising that hiring a designer is not a luxury - it's a business strategy."
