Italy goes to China: the Shanghai Italian Centre
Italy's pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 confirmed the mutual interest between the two countries, when the exhibition La città dell’uomo, Vivere all’Italiana (The city of man: living Italian style) recorded a turnout of more than 7,000,000 visitors - making Italy's the second most visited pavilion at the event.
Rather than dismantle the pavilion, the Italian government donated it to the Republic of China government, in order that it can function as a centre of cultural exchange and business between the two countries. The result is the Shanghai Italian Centre.
Running until January 31 2013 at the centre is Tradizione Innovazione. L’Italia in Cina (Tradition Innovation: Italy to China), an exhibition organised by the Triennale di Milano that covers arts, crafts, fashion, design and Italian technology, each shown in relation to Chinese culture.
The exhibition is divided into seven sections: the icons of Italy, the gold of Italy, Italy rediscovered: ecological and sustainable modernity, care of the Earth, from China to Italy: Venice and the East, the square of joy, and the peninsula of light.
